Fenix HP30R rechargeable headlamp review. Beauty and the beast.

Me to myself during testing:
"Don't point it that way! There's other campers near!"
Keep in mind that the other campers were 300 yards away-and in the woods. Is this light really that bright?
YES. IT IS. 😀

Say hello to the powerful, yet so versatile Fenix HP30R headlamp.
My writing style in my reviews-tend to flow as an organized rant. I'm struggling a bit here, because, where do I start?

The basics, we'll start there.
The light is the full package.
Full weight for me was 13 3/4 ounces, which includes the two 18650 battery's it comes with.
The battery pack has a belt clip, which is removable.
The headband is quite nice with a removable upper band to help keep this light on your head.

Doesn't sound like a rant yet? Well, let's get down to business here.

Tent VS HP30R

The light has two modes, Flood and spot.
Each mode has four settings: Low, Medium, High, and Turbo.
The magic behind this beast is that you can use flood and spot both at once.
The numbers for the floodlight are:

  •  Low @ 5 lumens
  • Medium @ 130 lumens
  • High @ 400 lumens
  • Tiurbo @ 750 lumens
The numbers for the spot are:
  •  Low at 30 lumens
  • Medium @ 130 lumens
  • High @ 400 lumens
  • Turbo @ 1000 lumens

Here's where the fun comes in, want big spot with a bit of flood? Try 1000 lumen spot with 130 lumen flood. And so on and so forth. You can really tweak these to match the situation you're in.
1750 lumens maxed out. It's awesome. The farthest trees in the pic were in fact, quite far away!

With great power comes great run times! That's not usually the case in the high performance lighting world. But with the HP30R it is the case. A 130 lumen flood for 23 hours? Or try a 30 lumen spot for 83 hours? Perhaps a 400 lumen flood AND a 400 lumen spot for over 3 hours?  Want to go nuts and blast out 1750 lumens for about 2 hours?

Powering this is two 18650 (2600mAh) rechargeable batteries, but, what if you upgraded to the Fenix ARB-L18-3500 (3500mAh) batteries? I'm quite awful at math, so you calculate how much extra run-time that gives you.

Keep in mind, that this light doubles as a battery charger.  I can charge my other Fenix products, or my Galaxy phone using the supplied cable. Fantastic!
The HL26R refueling from the mother ship HP30R

Versatile.

It really is an amazing package.
Refueling this light is easy as well. Simply recharge the batteries in the battery pack with the included USB charging cable-straight from your wall socket, or battery brick. or toss in a few 18650's from your standalone charger, or toss in 4 CR123A's. Versatile!

So, how does it feel? Fit and finish?
Fenix fans have come to expect a certain level of quality. This light certainly delivers. My main backpacking light is the HL26R. There's a significant weight difference here between these two lights. The HL26R at about 3 ounces and the HP30R at nearly 14 ounces. Once I set the HP30R up, got the battery pack on my belt, and the light on my head, I didn't notice it. It rode well, and was very comfortable. Nothing ever came loose or shook loose at all. I night hiked 4 miles with this in the rain. It did magnificent.

The controls in the dark are easy and intuitive. After a few rounds you just click it and go.

The materials are spot on. The housing is metal, not plastic and has a genuinely high end feel to it.

#SeeWhatMatters
This light is the real deal. It delivers on it's promise of power. But surprises with it's versatility. It's incredibly powerfully, yet very aesthetically pleasing. It's a great looking light. And it delivers a powerful punch with incredible performance.

It's the Fenix lighting HP30R from Fenix lighting!
