Princeton Tec Fuel review

So a Fenix Lighting outdoors ambassador walks into a Princeton Tec booth full of marketing reps...
And what happens?
We build a crazy light!!! That's what happens!

Enter the Princeton Tec Fuel.

This budget friendly little light has a twist, you can go right on the website and customize it just the way you want. Check it out @  http://spectrum.princetontec.com/?a=new&m=fuel

Yep, it's a doozy.
In terms of the light, it's a very simple, very basic light. With 4 functions. The fun is in the customization. Make it wild, or make it mild, it's up to you.

The light itself is a 4x 5mm LED setup. I'm not sure about the manufacturer of the emitters.
It' a 3AAA light.
It has a max output of 70 lumens.
Max runtime of  146 hours.

Princeton Tec proudly claims that the lights are 100% American made.
I can partially attest to this. As it was fellow Americans that helped me build this wild little light.
From a bin of parts I picked- this creation was born.

Performance is where this guy does struggle a little. Keep in mind, this light was designed for more a general purpose type light. I might take it on a over-nite trip, but nothing more than that.
However, the claimed run-time is fairly strong!
  • Low = 146 hours
  • Medium = 90 hours
  • High = 51 hours
  • Blink = 96 hours.
Those are stout numbers, but keep in mind those are Alkaline batteries. They may really struggle in the cold.

If there's an IPX rating, I can't find one. Take a look at the battery compartment in the next picture, do you see any seals or gaskets?

There are no seals or gaskets. Assume that this light will get wet in a rain shower. Because I assure you it will.

Beam profiles are interesting, but typical of a multi LED Light. It's not sure if the tint is cool or warm.

Final thoughts:
  • Headband is sturdy, well built
  • Customization is second to none. It's fantastic.
  • No protection from water or dust intrusion.
  • Great run-time
  • Bright enough to hike by.
  • Color renditioning all over the place. Rather hard on the eyes after a while.
I do like this little light. It was a blast to make!
But just keep in mind this light has some limits to it.
It's not something I would take on a long back-country trip. Instead I built this light for my wife. She's a nurse and this light is PERFECT for what she does.

It's fun light, and American Made.

It's the Princeton Tec Fuel.
